Literary Organizations

Academy of American Poets, a resource for poets and educators, the Academy is America's premier literary organization with a national membership that supports American poets at all stages of their careers. The Web site provides an information database on recognized contemporary poets, the Academy educational and promotional programs, and calendars of events.

Austin Poetry Society, a chapter of the Poetry Society of Texas, and an affiliate of the Academy of American Poets.

Texas Nafas is a literary nonprofit producer of educational video and television programming on poetry.

Writer's League of Texas A membership organization that promotes the art of writing by supporting writers in their artistic and professional goals. With over twelve hundred members, the Writers' League of Texas is the second largest regional writing group in the nation.

The The Poetry Kit provides an array of listings of poetry related sites, including publishers, competitions and festivals, and sponsors a poetry Web ring.

The Poetry Super Highway A major online resource for poets and writers with hundreds of categorized links, 2 poets featured every week, an annual contest, poetry book exchange, bookstore, poetry classifieds, chat room, and the home of Los Angeles poet Rick Lupert.

QuotesandPoem.com - Contains a good collection of quotes from the great thinkers and poetry from many famous poets. Quotes and poems are classified based both on poet and subject.

Poetry and Literary Festivals and Events

Forrest Fest - Lamesa, Texas, hosts the only poetry festival in West Texas. The fest is scheduled each April to celebrate National Poetry Month, and features workshops and performances by noteworthy poets and artists, including you, story telling, a competition and a Bar-B-Q.

Goddard College - TLA Power of Words Conference - Annually in August, Goddard College in Plainfield, VT. The conference, organized by the college�s Transformative Language Arts concentration, features writers, storytellers, healers, educators, artists and activists. Discover ways to use writing, storytelling, drama, music and related arts to make a meaningful living.

international literature festival berlin - The festival, held in September, is organized by the Peter-Weiss-Stiftung f�r Kunst und Politik e.V. and the Berliner Festispiele under the patronage of the German UNESCO committee. Poetry International Festival - Held annually during June in Rotterdam�s City Theatre (Netherlands) Throughout the festival week there are events and presentations inspired by a theme. Poetry International has invited national and international poets to present their work and views, and special theme nights feature the poetry and thematic creation of invited artists. The site also provides extensive links poetry festival sites around the World, and many other poetry related sites.

Publishers

The Austin Poetry Co-op was formed to provide an opportunity for the discussion of poetry issues and the review of the works of its members. This is a non profit organization and there is no charge for membership. Also publishes The Glass Eye, the biannual journal of the Austin Poetry Co-op.

'eye' poetry journal focuses on the literature of editors themselves but also accepts work from the underground, and is released whenever enough quality poems have been amassed and aims for about 30 unique voices per issue. GinBender.com is an entirely online publication intended as a supplement to available print media, GinBender publishes poetry, prose, and short-short fiction, and offers literary contests.

The Great American Poetry Journal is a hardcover serial poetry anthology open year-round to submissions of poems.

Lucidity & The Lucidity Ozark Poetry Retreat is a national journal of verse that features understandable poetry. The Lucidity Ozark Poetry Retreat convenes at Eureka Springs, Arkansas, during April each year. Poets from across the country attend this yearly event in the Ozark mountains each spring which features lectures, workshops, read-arounds, possible publication in Lucidity, a contest with cash awards, and banquet. lucidityjournal@00books.com

The Wildflower Press, a small-press book publisher in Albuquerque, New Mexico, is a collaborative press (authors pay production and printing costs) dedicated to publishing poetry, fiction, memoir, and books exploring alternative approaches to healing and spirituality.

Poetry Slam

The Austin Poetry Slam, a Poetry Slam International Slam Master venue, is held every Wednesday night at Ego's Bar, and sends a team of its top performers to the National Slam annually. The APS site provides the full low-down on slam and links to a wide array of poetry sites, including sites for slam venues around the country.
