Non-linear reality = Non-linear poetry
With Stefanie Petrik
Ruta Maya Balcony, 3601 South Congress Avenue
Language disintegration and its effects on poetry. I'm going to show you two methods of writing poetry that are non-sequential in process, that help to extend and re-mix already existing texts of your own, and that of others.

The Passionate Pen
With Agnes Meadows
Ruta Maya (lower level), 3601 South Congress Avenue
The word ‘passion’ is given a wide range of definitions, from obsession and fanaticism to adoration and excitement. But writing without passion can often result in indifferent, safe, and sometimes cliché-ridden work. In this workshop Agnes Meadows helps writers take a closer look at releasing their creative constraints so that they can more readily embrace the passionate pen.

When Poetry Becomes Therapy (All Ages)
With Michael Guinn
The Hideout, 617 North Congress Avenue
An artist should ever strive for his/her art to invoke change. It does not matter if that change is social, political, cultural, spiritual or artistic. But it should provide a format for another soul’s creative self expression that does not inhibit their spirit. Two very powerful vehicles for that kind of self expression are the arts of creative writing and performance poetry. With Spoken Word we can address more than just grammar, reading, public speaking, entertainment or heartfelt messages from the soul. We can teach young and old the value of critical thinking and respect.

Writer's Block: Your Friend in Disguise
With Robert Wynne
Writer's League of Texas, 611 South Congress Avenue, Suite 130
We will discuss a few of the causes of writer's block and some methods for combating it, focusing on how writers can learn and benefit from NOT writing.

Giving Voice to Words: Reading Aloud with Unbridled Passion
With Olga Samples Davis
Twin Oaks Library Conference Room – 2301 South Congress, Suite 7
You have written the words…and now you want to breathe life into them as you speak them aloud! In this workshop you will learn simple techniques for managing stage fright and developing confidence and power in your oral presentations.

Text-collecting
With John Row
Ruta Maya Balcony, 3601 South Congress Avenue
A workshop on collecting the memories and aspirations of passers by in public places and presenting them as poems the 'suits' can understand and the participants can value.

Musical Improvisation and Poetry
With Bob Mud
Ruta Maya (lower level), 3601 South Congress Avenue
Bring instruments and/or poetry you would like illustrated with music and sounds. The session is open to poets without instruments too—we need you for the musicians to accompany your words and rhythm of speech. In fact, it should be regarded as a reading session with reruns so musicians can experiment. This is not a science exactly, it is improvisation with capital IMP including sound effects and, perhaps, home-made or improvised instruments.

Poetry as Trance: Interiority as the Source of Poetic Invention
With Ric Williams
Twin Oaks Library, 2301 South Congress Avenue, Suite 7
There are two premises at the root of this workshop: first, poetry is inherent in the human psyche, and second, in an infinite universe everyone is at the center of the garden. Taking ideas from T.S. Eliot’s objective correlatives, surrealism’s stream of consciousness, and situation cut-ups, Ric will lead a hands-on poetry workshop that will demonstrate how one can begin right where they are –whether first time poet or experienced craftsman– and follow that point as deeply as they dare. The intention is to find startling new connections that are both universal and personal, and where form and function develop organically and with a profound richness.

In Defense of Poetry
With Ken Fontenot
The Hideout, 617 North Congress Avenue
Proceeding from certain negative assumptions about poetry (by noteworthy poets as well as a few of my own), each participant will focus, while writing a brief one-or-two page theme, on the idea of a personal defense of poetry.  Hopefully, thoughts from these short themes will stimulate a productive discussion.
